The question we get a lot from guests are where are the good and trusted local places to eat/drink in Vilanculos? Although you have chef Sarmento and Antonia that are excellent cooks, sometimes it is nice to book at a spots on the mainland or perhaps on the islands to support the locals.  1. Azura on Benguerra Island  The hotel has a rustic yet idyllic outdoor beach side restaurant called Peri-Peri. The stunning spot has a swimming pool on the waters edge and sun loungers and beds covered by thatch umbrellas. What we love about this spot is the family style vibe of sitting around a long table with your own personal grills where you can cook your own fresh seafood to your liking. The restaurants serves the best Mozambican cuisines on the island, paired with a variety of fine wines or mixology menu. Bookings must be made in advance before arrival at Perlo Do Mar. 2. Anantara Bazaruto Island  There are two restaurants that can be booked, Golfinho which offers flavors of the world and Ta

Bazaruto Archipelgo became a nationally protected conservation area in 1971. Then in 2019, it become  globally recognized by BioFund, every year a summit is hosted in Vilanculos with the mayor, several other neighbouring African presidents' and donors' to discuss the progression of conservation.  It doesn't just stop there. There are a number of foundations and conservation non-profit organizations making incredible strides in marine research, reef observatory, huge beach clean-ups, artificial reef restoration, local education in environmental management and the hiring of the locals to sustain these projects. These groups of innovative environmental enthusiasts are, undeniably, the reason for the existence, growth and continuation of many of the endangered species, still to this day.   Bazaruto boasts with wildlife with 180 identified species of birds, 45 species of reptiles, endemic butterflies, suni antelope and freshwater crocodiles. Around 2000 species of fish have been

Vilanculos is known to be sun drenched with clear skies, calm sea conditions and summery temperatures all-year round. However like most coastal areas, the high humidity and light showers can be expected. When people ask us what is the best time of year to visit we say it all depends on what your preferences are.  November through to February, the heat soars at a high of 30˚C and the nights are cooler. What we love about this period, is that the baking heat can be balanced with a few rainy days of relaxing and recovering from those longer sunny days. These dry temperatures are prone to more mosquitos and Malaria can be a bigger concern so make sure to use lots of mosquito repellent.  November to April, is the turtle nesting season where you are more likely to see turtles floating in the ocean or laying eggs on land.  If you'd prefer to be comfortably basking in the sun all day long with G&T in hand, June to September is for you. These months are still very warm but more mild w

Authenticity of Vilanculos

There is something about Vilanculos, that just sets it apart from any other beach destinations in Africa. Perhaps it's the remoteness or that it is located in the heart of the Bazaruto Archipelgo aka 'The Pearl of the Indian Ocean'. However, I think it reaches far deeper than that.  There are those places that don't feel real because of their overwhelming beauty. I can confidently say that Vilanculos is one of them. It all starts when peering through your porthole window down onto the dotted groves of palm trees, crisp ivory sands that blend into the vast blue palette of sapphire and jade. From that distance the mainland looks vacant, almost as if it has been peacefully sheltered from the masses of tourism.                                                           Stepping off the plane, you are welcomed with the rolling tropical breeze and radiant heat. The airport is small but very clean and tidy much alike the town. As you are driven through the streets, you will s
